No more sausage making.....surely not!

Postby jenny_haddow » Wed Dec 04, 2013 5:11 pm

Any one else facing this dilemma? Last month my OH had a heart attack while we were in France and a subsequent cardiac arrest. Thanks to the excellence of the French health service he is still with us and doing well. This is someone who plays sport, cycles 100 miles, no problem, and climbed the Alps this summer, but has an inherited tendency to high cholesterol. Now, sausages and all the other stuff I like to make aren't cholesterol friendly, so I made up a batch of low fat sausages. They are OK for a sausage casserole, but not the greatest on their own. Bacon is OK, I can take the fat off it, but I think cheese will be out. Any of you have this problem, if so I would be grateful for some ideas for a way forward?

Thanks in advance

I glad your OH survived! I have to watch my cholesterol as well (on a low dose of statin) but eat small portions of sausage weekly. I've enjoyed this chicken sausage:

I also liked captain wassname's loin chops here:

Bearing in mind that you have complete control over what you make where as other folk with similar problems buy shop bought, just the salt amounts and even down to the amount of fat that you put in your products should be 100% better than most.
Despite heart problems etc and other related illness iI still have salt, some butter, cheese but it is all part of a very varied diet and in moderation, whilst we would be stupid to dismiss scientic studies about cholestrol etc completely it does seem that the advice changes on a yearly basis, my moto is a varied balanced diet and a treat now and then suits me and as i said making a lot of food ourselves from fresh produce gives us far greater control of what we eat compared to what the normal consumer would have to rely on given the same circumstances, food is a big part of our lives, be interesting to get a specialist in the field to go and buy what they recommend you should eat, have it tested and then compared to something you could make. All the best for the future, I am sure you should get lots of useful on here, Regards Gary.

Sausages are a sometimes food not a staple
There is lots of food that is cholesterol lowering that can be eaten in between.
Stress is also a major factor too.
yet to take the plunge still researching

Hi Jenny, sorry to hear about your other half - hope he makes a full recovery. As others have stated, everything in moderation. I enjoy making sausages as much as I enjoy eating them and I suppose you are the same, otherwise we would all be down the supermarket buying/eating their 'finest' range. So keep on making them and just cut back on the amounts served.

All the best, Ste.

Thanks for the input guys, all good advice. I've always felt that the amount of home production I do has to be beneficial, so I think I will continue with the old tried and true recipes. We probably eat sausages only once or twice a week anyway, so we may as well have good ones I reckon. We'll have to cut down on cheese though, home made stilton is too irresistable. After he came out of hospital I set a fairly strict regime, probably shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. I've been rotating the menu on a one day meat, one day fish, and one vegetarian, we both dread the latter although a curry is useful there. Advice can be conflicting, a lot of the foods connected with good nutrition and health have high cholesterol, eggs for example. I bought a low cholesteral recipe book and found a lot of the recipes contained eggs, cheese etc. confusing! Oh well, he's up and running again, cycling to work, he's a software engineer, can be stressful at times. Fortunately, I'm fit a fiddle, although I do have to go and have a secret fry up every now and again.

Cheers,

Jen

Can I eat eggs?
Yes you can. Eggs are very nutritious. They contain good quality protein, lots of
vitamins and minerals, and mostly the healthier polyunsaturated fat.

The dietary cholesterol in eggs has only a small insignificant effect on blood LDL cholesterol, so you can enjoy up to six eggs each week as part of a healthy balanced diet. Find out more about eggs.

Hi Jen,
a traumatic time indeed, my best wishes for you both,
I faced (and am still facing) this dilemma but I am nolonger traumatised by it : -

Back in 2009, the morning of my 65th birthday (on such a day! boy does that make one feel very old !!)
,,, ambulance,,,, trolleys etc !,,,
thanks to a brill (Bristol) health service and a few stents later I have never felt better !

After years of healthy living, -- I liked my raw veg., active lifstyle, not a desk job, not a smoker etc&etc, (9-10stone) sounds like your OH did all the right things as well !
With no family history we can only suspect an undiagnosed cholesterol problem

However, now that it is diagnosed, now that it is monitored, now that it is under control
(I guess that OH is now on simvastatin or atorvastatin ?)
I have no hang-ups I eat all the sausages I desire,
we now raise (amateur for the extended family) all our own pork, lamb, mutton, beef, poultry (hen, duck, quail) etc.

You dont mention OHs age ? mayby at my age I am feeling carefree ! hahaa, demented laughter ? --
but for me all the blind-healthy lifestyle upto 65 didnt do any good in respect of cholesterol,
so now I will rely on the science of the testing regime and will enjoy life ( oh did I mention the hens and quail eggs ? :) )

Oh, PS
Snags mentions Omega7

My consultant (head of department) prescribed a lifetime of various pills one of which was Omacor (EPH and DHP, fishyoil type stuff ), later his delegated assistant consultant reduced it to 3years dependency.
Later still my then (now ex) GP declared it (a) too costly and (b) not provenly effective upon which he discontinued it.

On reading the literature* I agree with my then GP that _it_ the nhs_ approved one is too expensive,
a similar dose rate of EPA and DHA can be obtained in/with/by Boots The Chemist ( others are no doubt available at a modest personal cost also) with 1, 2 or 3 capsules of their standard omega3 supplement.

* inconclusive at best, I decide that a modest dose of omega7 may do some good but will not do any harm,
similar to, but of a lower order, the question of asprin for long term heart conditions.

Thanks for your reply, I was hoping there would be a fellow sufferer on the forum who knew the score. We are on the usual raft of medication, which works. All of this was prescribed in France and our GP has concurred and taken it on. The results of the first blood test after his attack now show a Cholesterol of 2.2 phenominal given the original was off the scale. He's 57, back at work, and today he has been demolishing an old shed and laying new foundations for a new one.
I'm easing up a bit on the stringent diet regime. It wasn't doing me any good at all! I am watching fat content more closely though. With Christmas coming, I'm still making all the usual goodies, life's too short, we'll chill and enjoy the holiday.

Cheers

Excellent news !
My basic message was that you dont need to worry about controlling his cholesterol now, cos it is being monitored ! And he doesnt need to worry about his intake cos it is shown to be at a good level and he knows it now !
[whereas the great unwashed public, sorry I mean the average person :) , like wot I (we) was, does not know their cholesterol level.]
So, provided the statin meds are not pushing the limit to control the cholesterol levels** then "panic ye not " :) enjoy your sausages :)

I could have PMed you all my previous postings, but as you didnt know me from Adam I thort it best to do it in plain view so that anyone else could chip in and say "he is mad" or whatever !!

But if you have any particular questions that you would like my view on then please feel free to PM me if you wish.

** If we had been youngsters, teenagers, whatever, I would not be advocating a cavalier attitude to a lifetime dependency on statins to control a profligate fatty lifestyle ;) but at my age (in view of my previous stated healthy diet!) I am going to enjoy my remaining sausages !lol!

He's 57, back at work, and today he has been demolishing an old shed and laying new foundations for a new one.

Great stuff, yes, similar, in my case the extra energy was amazing, I was ready to conquer the world !

I'm easing up a bit on the stringent diet regime. It wasn't doing me any good at all!
Good for you,
I could see it in the eyes of my family it didnt do them a lot of good either :(

I am watching fat content more closely though.
no harm in being aware of course but try not to let it "take over"
btw have you asked for a cholesterol test ? ? ? ! !
We dont want any more surprises do we ? ;)

With Christmas coming, I'm still making all the usual goodies, life's too short
Indeed, chill ! well done.

Best wishes.
